Personal Reflection: This semester was a lot different than what I expected. There were difficult times this semester and I didn't handle them as well as I could have. I have learned from those situations and feel I can be a better nurse because of them. I really enjoyed working with little kids and watching them improve in their situation. Most of my parents were very receptive to the teachings I gave and were happy that I worked so well with them and took care of their kids so well. I also was able to start my first IV ever in this clinical rotation and I was able to get it on my first try! I felt really good about myself and my patient and her mother were proud of how well I did. They stated that I did really well for my first time.

IPR: used therapeutic communication to assist patient's in overcoming/understanding/coping with their mental illness

Biopsychosocial Assessment: developed nursing diagnoses related to mental illness and developed goals and interventions using scholarly journals.

Patient Teaching: How to Effectively Cope with Anxiety using art/writing feelings in a journal

Personal Reflection: This was definitely a different experience than I have ever had before but I really enjoyed it. It gave me sense of self worth knowing that I was able to help someone reduce their anxiety and make them feel better. It was hard getting use to using therapeutic communication. It was also a little intimidating and scary asking patient's questions the first time. I had no idea what to expect. I enjoyed going to Heartland Behavioral Healthcare but I really enjoyed the Crisis Center and Akron Children's Hospital. I thought these were both very interesting and great experiences to attend.

N40005

Personal Reflection: I enjoyed this class. It taught me a lot about different topics that are important in nursing such as diversity, violence, and professionalism. Personal Reflection: This was definitely a challenging experience for me, but it was so rewarding. I was very scared to start in the Emergency Department but I am so glad I chose this experience. I learned more things and seen more things that I have never experienced before. It was a great experience. My preceptor was awesome and showed me everything and allowed me to do anything and everything. I was able to see the process of caring for a heart attack patient. I was also able to be a part of the trauma team and taking care of patients that were in life or death situations. When the ED doctor said that I needed to be a part of a critical care team (whether it be ICU, ED, or another part of critical care), I knew that I made the right decision and that I could see myself working in this setting.

N40010

Nursing of the Critically Ill Patient

Competencies:

  • Caring for the critically ill patient
  • Caring for patients on mechanical ventilation

  • Maintenance of multiple IV drips
  • Hemodynamic monitoring
  • Arterial Line Management
  • Passing medication through NG/OG/PEG tube

EBP: Nursing Process Paper - Part 1 (view), Nursing Process Paper - Part 2 (view)

Patient Teaching: It was hard to do any teachings with my patients due to them being on a mechanical ventilator and being sedated. I was able to teach family members about patient's being on the ventilator and the different things associated with the ventilator (sedation, mouth care, suctioning, etc). I was also able to teach family members about their family member's illness/diagnosis.

Personal Reflection: This has been a very different class than what I am used to. It has been very challenging. I have had difficulty transitioning into taking care of patients who are critically ill and who are on mechanical ventilation. It has helped me build my confidence in my skills being a nurse. I feel more comfortable working with IV’s and different IV drips and monitoring IVs. I also feel more comfortable assessing critically ill patients and patients who are on mechanical ventilation.

EBP: Community Assessment (view)

Patient Teaching: Teaching 3rd graders on proper oral health

Personal Reflection: I have actually really enjoyed this semester. I didn’t think I would enjoy this clinical rotation as much as I have. I could see myself being a community health nurse. I enjoyed learning about the different services in the community. I really enjoyed my experience at the county jail and definitely could see myself working there. I could also see myself working in the community clinic or in the Gabriel Cancer Center in their research field.
